JEHUE GEAR UP WEBPAGE
Welcome to our GEAR UP page. Jehue Middle School is proud to be in partnership with California State University, San Bernardino to promote a college going atmosphere. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a program designed to educate our students about college preparation and the numerous opportunities available to them in higher education. Whether or not your son or daughter has talked about going to college before, we hope that GEAR UP inspires excitement over their futures.

GEAR UP THURSDAY Every Thursday at Jehue, we celebrate GEAR UP. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their GEAR UP t-shirts and discuss college issues. The GEAR UP Sports League is going steady with Soccer Practice every Tuesday and Thursday afterschool, with the condition that students will participate in our GEAR UP/Jaguar Study Hall. GEAR UP is helping to fund our after school tutoring program on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students who need extra assistance in Math and Language Arts. We are anticipating CSUSB's Educational Counseling Interns arrival this spring as they work with selected 6th grade families to help improve academic performance. Whew! GEAR UP continues to provide quality programs to our Jaguar community for which we are most grateful. |

FOLLOW THE LEADERS
THE GEAR UP STUDENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE IS COMPRISED OF 7TH GRADE JAGUARS WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRAINSTORMING AND CARRYING OUT IDEAS THAT HELP TO PROMOTE THE GEAR UP MESSAGE. WHETHER ORGANIZING LUNCH TIME ACTIVITIES, HANGING SIGNS/BANNERS, OR REPRESENTING JEHUE AT GEAR UP EVENTS, THESE STUDENTS ARE GEARED UP TO MAKE HIGHER EDUCATION A PART OF OUR EVERYDAY THINKING HERE AT JEHUE! |

The GEAR UP Leadership Committee had their
first lunchtime activity on Thursday, January 19th. With clever thinking,
the group decided to hold a LIMBO ACTIVITY where the lowering of the bar
represented each year of college (e.g., freshman year, sophmore year, etc) and
how much more challenging it becomes. The Jaguars enjoyed this activity,
combined with Mr. Ed's DJing skills, and strived to succeed at each limbo bar.
Jaguars who made it successfully all four years were rewarded with a LIMBO
certificate, encouraging them to GO PRO!

AN OLE FASHIONED SCHOOL RALLY
On Wednesday, November 16th, Jehue celebrated
the return of GEAR UP with a good ole fashioned lunchtime rally. Officer
Tapia and her dancers got their dancing moves into GEAR while the GEAR UP
LEADERSHIP students distributed t-shirts to all the Jaguars. Ms. Wade and
Mr. Ed got the crowd jumpin with the aide of Officer Telphy and his hip hop
mixin tunes. The best part of the activity was the promise that there was
much more GEAR UP to come throughout the rest of the year.

JEHUE KICKS IT INTO GEAR
On Saturday, November 19th GEAR UP held the ANNUAL GUIE SOCCER TOURNAMENT at
CSUSB. Our team competed with representatives from the other GEAR UP
schools across the Inland Empire. Both the boys and girls represented
beautifully, showing not only excellent sportsmanship, but true pride in their
school and how they played the game. The Jehue Community is proud of each
and every one of you, and special recognition goes out to Coaches Quiros and
Hamner for their participation and support in getting you prepared for this huge
event. Way to go!!!

GEAR
UP ACADEMIC COUNSELING AND SUPPORT OCTOBER 2004
WEDNESDAY EVENINGS 6:15 TO 7:30PM
We were pleased to welcome Dr. Donna Schnorr's ECLG 658 Career Counseling Class to Jehue this past fall. This was a class of Cal State San Bernardino students working toward earning their Masters of Science in Educational Counseling. These interns provided career and academic counseling to our Jaguars in hopes of fostering a desire to attend college and follow in their footsteps of graduate school. Jaguars were also encouraged to bring their schoolwork with them to receive one on one support in areas that they may struggle in. Parents were invited to sit in and participate as well. Feedback from the students participating was very positive. Note: This was an 8 week program that ended on December 1st. We look forward to introducing this program to our next round of Jaguars in October of 2005. Who knows, this program could produce the next round of doctors, lawyers, and talk show hosts among our community.
In this program, students are presented with activities geared toward career development, self awareness, likes and dislikes, and overall interests. They are then shown how to relate this information to particular careers.
