Derek Parra, Eisenhower graduate of 1988, surprised the speedskating community on Saturday at the Winter Olympics, after briefly setting a world record in the 5000 meter race. Parra is known as a better skater at the shorter distances and wasn't expected to be a medal contender in the longer race. Parra competes again on February 19, in the 1500 meter.
In interviews after the race, Parra was ecstatic over his results and when asked how he felt about winning a medal, he said, "It's a neat feeling. When I have the chance to go back home and talk to kids where I grew up, I'll tell them, 'Hey, if your dream is there, go for it.' It shows that a working-class man can be at the top of the podium, or on the podium."
